One more step towards the inclusion of people with disabilities and Mayan-speakers

Mérida, Yucatán, August 22, 2023. As reported a few days ago, Cultur and the company RAMCO, a digital animation producer, agreed to launch a saga of Mayan legends, and the first one that was produced was "The Legend of the Jaguar".

The first version was in Spanish with subtitles in the same language, the second was in Spanish with English subtitles -considering that the material will be taken to paradores where there are foreign visitors, such as Chichén and Uxmal, to name a few-, and the third, the most recent, was in Mayan and subtitles in Spanish.

It should be noted that in all previous versions, they also have interpretation in Mexican Sign Language (LSM), so that people with hearing disabilities can understand and enjoy them. It is understood that there are people with disabilities who do not know LSM, and therefore the subtitles were put in Spanish and English.

To achieve the version with English subtitles, Trevor Lehman Fernández, of Canadian descent, participated and the Mayan translation was in charge of Viviana Cetina Kituk, originally from Akil, both collaborators of Cultur; the first in the Directorate of Evaluation and Project Management and the second in the Marketing area. The interpretation in LSM, is in charge of Patricia Espinoza.

But it is not only about producing these works of art, also about promoting them and, therefore, since last Tuesday, August 1, the screening of the short film began on the big screens of the Cines Siglo XXI and it was to the taste of moviegoers, who have expressed it personally and on social networks.

From tomorrow, Wednesday 22 and until August 31, the Mayan language version will be screened with Spanish and LSM subtitles in the six theaters.

The Next Story

It is expected that the next story, which will be the "Legend of the Alux", will begin to be screened in the Cines Siglo XXI in the Spanish version, with subtitles also in Spanish and with interpretation of LSM, from September 1. As it happened now, it is expected that in the middle of that month, the Mayan version, Spanish subtitles and LSM will be transmitted.

Cultur Paradores Consolidate Their Presence in the Tourism Sector

The spaces operated by the agency in strategic areas of Yucatán are showing sustained growth and bolstering the tourism offerings leading up to 2026.

With tourism offerings present in Valladolid, Temozón, Tinum, Izamal, Chocholá, Halachó, Santa Elena, Progreso, Celestún, and Mérida, the Board of Trustees of the Cultural and Tourist Service Units of the State of Yucatán (Cultur) reported that more than three million people have visited the spaces under its management this year.

This influx reflects the interest in the state's natural, cultural, and heritage wealth and has helped position Yucatán as a preferred destination for national and international tourists, primarily from Canada and Europe.

The most recent figures from the Yucatán Tourism Observatory (OTY) confirm the sector's solid performance. According to this organization, the estimated economic impact of tourism reached 13,728.02 million pesos, demonstrating the sector's dynamism and its importance to thousands of Yucatecan families.

Regarding archaeological sites, Chichén Itzá registered almost two million visitors between January and November 2025; Uxmal recorded 269,972 visits, and Ek Balam received 110,722 visitors. During the same period, Pasaje Picheta reported 274,573 visitors.

In the eastern region, the Zací Handicrafts Market, located in the center of Valladolid, registered an influx of 128,915 people, while the Heroic Nights of Valladolid show brought together 93,177 attendees, as part of the cultural and tourist offer of the area.

In the natural and museum sectors, the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve received 40,909 visitors; the El Corchito Ecological Reserve, 85,722; and the Meteorite Museum in Progreso, 65,573. These figures reflect the interest in activities related to nature and scientific outreach.

With these results, the state is preparing to receive an even greater influx of visitors during the holiday season and the beginning of 2026, through initiatives aimed at strengthening its cultural and natural offerings and enhancing the experience of those who visit Yucatán.
