Located in the town of Hunukú, municipality of Temozón, Ek Balam is one of the most visited archaeological areas in the eastern parto f the state. It is located 186 kilometers from Mérida and 30 kilometers north of the city of Valladolid.
Ek Balam, which means “Lucero Jaguar”, is protected by two walls, ando its entrance begins with a Majestic Maya arch.
The site exhibits 45 structures including the Acropolis that contains the tomb Ukit Kan Le’k Tok, the ball game, the twin pyramids, the circular building known as the Oval Palace, and a stele representing a ruler of Ek Balam, possibly Ukit Jol Ahkul.
A distinctive feature in the area is its pictorial style, embodied in its buildings with representations of deities and mythical entities, as well as human beings and animals.
